The Milky Way
from Our Solar System Collection
Sylvia Arditi and Marc Lachièze-Rey, in Cosmos, discuss Immanuel Kant's hypothesis of 'island universes.' Kant, writing in the late 18th century, suggested that "matter may be distributed in the cosmos like islands in an archipelago emerging from a dark sea." In recent years astronomers have identified millions of galaxies and presume that there are even billions of galaxies, billions of archipelagos emerging from the Cosmos. Our own gigantic Milky Way is just one of perhaps many millions of galaxies. Its beauty is awe-inspiring.
My fascination with astronomy is the motivation for Our Solar System Collection. The works of this collection explore the character of images presented to us by the celestial bodies;
icy quiescence, smothering incalescence, tranquil and
unchanging, with gentle breezes or furious upheaval.
The Milky Way works incorporate 24K Gold and other precious metals within the blown glass. The movement of glass and metals form an impression of the dynamic movement of this awesome, ever changing spiral galaxy, The Milky Way.
