This collection is named for Elizabetta Sirani, artist, gallery owner and supporter of women’s art. Born in Bologna in 1638, Elizabetta Sirani accomplished many things during her short life. By age of 17 she became an engraver and painter. At the time of her death at age 27, she had produced 160 engravings. In addition to being an independent painter, by the age of 19, Elisabetta Sirani also managed her family's workshop. When her father became incapacitated by gout, she assumed the role of supporting her parents, her siblings and herself, entirely through her artwork. In addition to her engravings, she produced at least 200 paintings, drawings, and etchings. She painted themes such as the Virgin and Child, self portraits, and other works. Elisabetta Sirani’s particular use of light and movement distinguished her work. In her early twenties she established a gallery for women painters and was renowned for her support of fellow artists.
