Aristotle, in the  Nicomachean Ethics written of 350 BCE stated that happiness (interpreted as being well and doing well) is the only thing that humans desire for its own sake, as opposed to riches, honor, health or friendship. Aristotle wrote that men seek wealth, fame or honor, or health not only for its own sake but because it bring a certain happiness. The term that is translated as "happiness", is for Aristotle is something active, not a mere emotion or state. The good life, is the practice of virtue.
